Murder for Power

Saddam Hussein stayed in power quite effectively for years by murdering his rivals. Can you think of any cases where this has happened in the United States?

I always had a suspicion that when Dick Cheney told Senator Paul Wellstone that if he (Paul) did not vote in agreement with Cheney - and I can't remember what the issue was- that he (Cheney) would make him pay dearly (I have no recollection of the exact quote.) Wellstone, looking like a possible candidate for 2008 at least, wound up a victim of a plane crash.

I know he wasn't the only high profile victim of a plane crash- Ron Brown, John Kennedy Junior, the members of the Hendrick Nascar racing family, John Denver and so on, so it happens, I guess. But, and I suppose this is only because I have a liberal bias- I really thought it was too coincidental, because Cheney had threatened him in a percolation of volatility that rarely surfaces in his character.
